Löwen play out 1-1 draw at 1. FC Kaiserslautern
The Blau-Gelben were left to settle for just a point on the night in front of a crowd of 20,100 in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. The hosts got off to the brighter start, but as the tie progressed, Eintracht steadily improved and took a deserved lead into the break, thanks to an excellently played out goal by Hernández (27’). The Blau-Gelben held onto their lead throughout the bulk of the second period, but late on, the Roten Teufel levelled through Kastaneer (80‘).
Eintracht were unbeaten making the trip to the Pfalz region, having taken five points from two games (1 win, 2 draws). A win on the night would see Lieberknecht’s men move into fourth spot. The hosts, on the other hand, were under pressure in front of the home fans, stuck in the nether regions of the table with just one point to show from their three outings.
Trainer Torsten Lieberknecht made four changes to the side that shared the spoils with FC Erzgebirge Aue. Becker, Samson, Hernández and Abdullahi all got their chance in the starting eleven, at the expense of Sauer, Dacaj, Biada and Nyman. The hosts began with Correia and Kasteneer in place of Koch and Fechner. In Correia and Kessel, FCK had two former Löwen in their starting eleven.
17th minute: What a chance for the Löwen! Abdullahi and Khelifi combine to put the Swiss attacker through on goal, but FCK keeper Müller is equal to the strike.
19th minute: Next opening for Blau-Gelb. Zuck tries his luck with a dipping shot frm 25 meters out, but sends his effort just over the crossbar.
24th minute: Free-kick for FCK. Löwen keeper Fejzic is alert and clears the danger.
27th minute: GOOOAAALLL by Onel Hernández – 0-1! Abdullahi takes on a long ball from Reichel and back-heels it into the path of Khelifi. The winger bursts past his opposite number at pace and lays back to Hernández, whose direct effort loops over Müller, to put Eintracht in the driving seat!
45th minute: Confusion in the Braunschweiger box. The Löwen initially struggle to clear their lines, but Boland eventually hoofs the ball out of the danger-zone.
49th minute: Free-kick for Kaiserslautern. Atik delivers the ball to the head of Osawe. The striker’s header crashes back into play off the underside of the crossbar. Fortune favours the Löwen on this occasion.
57th minute: Atik chips a free-kick effort over the wall, but Fejzic is perfectly placed to make a simple save.
61st minute: Kessel has a go from the right side, but Fejzic gets a hand up to bat the ball away from the target.
64th minute: Another chance for the Roten Teufel – Kessel again. But once again, Fejzic is well-positioned and equal to the shot.
68th minute: The ball falls to Valsvik, who controls on the edge of the six-yard box and lays wide to Baffo, whose shot on goal is blocked away by Müller.
80th minute: Goal for 1. FC Kaiserslautern – 1-1. Kastaneer first loses his glasses, but then beats baffo and squares to the centre. Reichel looks to launch himself in and clear the danger, but the captain’s touch turns the ball into his own net.
