Eintracht stumble at the first hurdle
The Löwen crash out of the cup to a 1-2 defeat in Kiel
In the first round of the DFB-Cup, the Löwen crashed out of the competition with a 1-2 (0-0) defeat away to Holstein Kiel. In the first-half, the hosts had the better of the play, but Eintracht had the best chance to open the scoring, when Ken Reichel fired a penalty wide (36‘). The Blau-Gelben made a more determined start to the second period and duly took the lead through Christoffer Nyman (48’). A red-card for Joseph Baffo (70‘) and the subsequent spot-kick, converted by Dominick Drexler (71‘), put the home side back in the driving seat and a precisely finished counter-attack by Marvin Ducksch (77‘) put Kiel through to the second round and Eintracht out at the first hurdle.
Whilst the Löwen began their league campaign with four points from two games, the Störche merely managed to rescue one point, with a last-gasp equaliser against SV Sandhausen. The last meeting between the two teams was back to 2010, when they played out a 1-1 draw in Holstein-Stadion. The last clash of the two sides in the DFB-Cup dates back to September 29th, 1979, when the Blau-Gelben progressed with a 3-1 win thanks to goals form Wolfgang Grobe (2) and Uwe Krause.
Both Mirko Boland and Ken Reichel were in Eintracht’s starting eleven when the sides last met seven years ago, with Torsten Lieberknecht on the side-line. The Löwen coach stuck with the same eleven that began last weekend, whilst the Störche made two changes with Patrick Herrmann and Dominic Peitz making way for Sebastian Heidinger and David Kinsombi from the outset.
5th minute: First attempt for the Löwen. A cross from the left finds the head of Hochscheidt, but the number 11 is unable to get any real power behind his effort and the ball lands in the arms of Kronholm.
11th minute: Great stop by Fejzic! Lewerenz breaks past Hochscheidt and Baffo, before firing in from a tight angle. The Eintracht keeper shoots up a hand and turns the ball away for a corner.
20th minute: Kiel have the better of the play and create the next chance on goal. A chipped pass in behind the Eintracht defence finds Ducksch, who can luckily only fire his shot into the side-netting.
30th minute: Another opening for the Störche! Schindler takes on a long pass and cuts inside from the right, but sends his shot the wrong side of the post!
36th minute: Hernandez takes the ball into the box and is duly felled by Schmidt. Referee Winkmann immediately points to the spot and Reichel takes on the responsibility but fires narrowly wide of the right post.
45th minute: Half-time. Winkmann blows punctually for the break. In the first 45 minutes, Kiel displayed more tempo, won more challenges, had the bulk of the possession and the clearer chances, whilst Eintracht had little more than a missed penalty to show for their efforts. Duly the sides go into the break locked in stalemate – 0-0!
47th minute: The second-half is underway. The Löwen make the brighter start and create two early openings through Zuck, but neither finds the target.
48th minute: GOOOAAALLL for Eintracht by Christoffer Nyman to make it 0-1! What a start to the second period. At one end, the Störche have a penalty claim waved away. Immediately on the break, Nyman drives into the penalty area and slots the ball cleverly past the advancing keeper to put Brtaunschweig in front!
53rd minute: And the chance to increase the advantage. Winning possession in midfield, Zuck quickly off-loads the ball to Nyman, whose shot flies well over the bar.
71st minute: Dominick Drexler makes it 1-1 from the penalty-spot. Taking on a well-weighted through ball from Drexler, Ducksch bears down on goal and is bundled over by Baffo, who subsequently sees red. Drexler makes no mistake from the spot and puts his side back on level terms.
77th minute: Goal for Holstein Kiel by Marvin Ducksch to make it 2-1. From an Eintracht corner, which proves too high for Valsvik, the hosts hit on the break. Lewerenz shifts the ball past Sauer and threads a pass through for Ducksch, who keeps his cool and slots home to put Holstein in front.
88th minute: Eintracht push for a late equaliser, which opens up space for Holstein. Sauer slides in at the vital moment to poke the ball away from the toe of Ducksch.
