Löwen secure second victory
3-0 home win over Greuther Fürth
On Wednesday evening, in a packed week of league action, Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth were guests in Braunschweig. A crowd of 18,785 spectators in EINTRACHT-STADION saw the Löwen take a significant lead with a double-strike in the first half thanks to Christoffer Nyman (22‘) and Joseph Baffo (28’). Late on, substitute Domi Kumbela added a third (79‘), to put the tie well and truly beyond the visitors.
Dating back to the previous season, Eintracht went into the tie on a ten home-game unbeaten run. The record from past meetings between the two sides is evenly balanced – with each claiming five wins, whilst four meetings ended with the points being shared. Although the ‘Kleeblatt‘ earned a 3-1 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday, Fürth had taken just four points from six games – the poorest start to a season in the club’s history.
In spite of the busy fixture schedule, Löwen coach Torsten Lieberknecht made just one change to his starting eleven, with Suleiman Abdullahi taking a place on the bench and being replaced in the starting eleven by Özkan Yildirim. Visiting coach Damir Buric stuck with his team from last weekend’s victory.
2nd minute: The first chance for the Blau-Gelben. Khelifi delivers a cross from the right, which eludes the attempted clearance by Narey. Hernandez is unable to capitalise, but the attack remains active. Yilidirim puts the ball back in the danger-zone, but Caligiuri clears the situation.
22nd minute: GOOOAAALLL FOR THE LÖWEN!
A long ball launched forward is nodded on by Hernandez into the path of Nyman. The striker bursts into the gap between the central-defenders and fires his shot past the keeper and in off the inside of the post to put the hosts in front.
28th minute: GOOOAAALLL FOR THE LÖWEN!
The Löwen strike again! Taking on a free-kick delivery from Boland, Reichel bustles through on the by-line and delivers a low pass to the back post, where Baffo gets in ahead of his marker to make it 2-0.
45th minute: Becker climbs on his opponent and the ‘Kleeblatt’ win a free-kick 16 meters from the Eintracht goal. Cigerci fires on goal, placing his shot narrowly the wrong side of the left post. A let off for the Löwen!
Half-time summary: Although the Löwen had the better of the play, both sides initially had problems making a significant impact. Mid-way through the first-half, the hosts then deservedly took the lead through Nyman and quickly added a second through Baffo, to make it 2-0 at the break.
54th minute: The Löwen display their qualities on the break. Yildirim threads a pass through to Reichel, who crosses to the centre. Nyman flings himself towards the ball but fails to make a connection.
76th minute: Free-kick for the visitors from 20 meters out in a half-right position. Gjasula measures up, but fires his effort over the crossbar.
79th minute: GOOOAAALLL FOR THE LÖWEN!
And that’s the decider! The Löwen win possession in their own half and press forward. Kumbela takes on a pass from Moll and has the opportunity to shoot. The striker cuts inside and fires past Megyeri into the far right corner.
Summed-up: The Löwen secured a deserved 3-0 win over SpVgg Greuther Fürth on the night! With Nyman and Baffo putting the Blau-Gelben on the road to victory in the first-half, substitute Kumbela made the destination of the points absolutely clear with eleven minutes to go. Coach Torsten Lieberknecht’s side now have eleven points on the board and move into seventh place in the table
