Löwen successful in fourth test
Eintracht secure 2-0 win over SV Viktoria Herxheim
Following a training session in the morning, later in the afternoon, the Blau-Gelben earned a 2-0 win in a test friendly against SV Viktoria 1913 Herxheim. In beaming sunshine, with the temperature exceeding 30°C, Julius Biada and Salim Khelifi got their names on the score-sheet. On the whole, coach Torsten Lieberknecht was not satisfied with his side’s display.
The Löwen got off to a determined, attack start – winning three corners within the first ten minutes, although none of which served to break the deadlock. In the eleventh minute, Julius Biada then fired the Blau-Gelben in front with a powerful strike from a central position. Just minutes later, Eintracht had the chance to double their advantage, with Max Sauer testing the opposition keeper from 18 meters out. From the resulting corner, Christoffer Nyman headed narrowly over the bar. The hosts from SV Viktoria got their first sight of goal in the 20th minute, but the shot was too central and Eintracht keeper Marcel Engelhardt had no problems parrying. Ten minutes later, a Herxheim attacker did managed to chip the ball over the advancing Engelhardt, but Sauer got back at the last moment to clear off the line and Eintracht took their narrow advantage into the break.
Dominant Löwen in the second-half
For the second period, Lieberknecht sent out a completely altered eleven. The first chance of the half fell to Ken Reichel. The left-footers powerful drive on goal was turned away for a corner. Proceedings were now confined to the Herxheim half of the pitch. Jan Hochscheidt dribbled his way through into the SV penalty area and laid back perfectly for Salim Khelifi, who slotted home to make it 2-0 – much to the joy of the travelling Löwen supporters – but the linesman spotted the final touch on the ball was from Domi Kumbela, who was ahead of the final defender and the goal was duly disallowed for offside. Minutes later, Joe Baffo then put the ball in the opposition net, but again the off-side flag denied the Löwen. Shortly before the final whistle, a second goal for Eintracht was allowed to count, when Khelifi left the Viktoria keeper without a chance, to make it 2-0 for the Blau-Gelben. Lieberknecht’s men came close to adding a third before the end, with Boland chipping a pass through to Kumbela in the box, but the striker was unable to make a connection and the chance went a-begging.
Torsten Lieberknecht: Our opponents today were very ambitious and motivated - Herxheim have a good team together. Our performance was not satisfactory. Considering all the test friendlies we’ve played so far, today’s was the weakest display. The second half was better than the first. In the first-half we played one misplaced pass after the next. Some of the lads didn’t do themselves any favours today. During the pre-season preparations, you must always do your very best.“
