Narrow defeat to Fiorentina
Löwen beaten 2-3 by the Italians
Just one day after the 2-2 draw in Dusseldorf, the Löwen were in action on Tuesday at the ‚Stadion am Salzgittersee’ in a test friendly against AC Fiorentina.
On his birthday, Eintracht coach Torsten Lieberknecht gave not only those not involved in Mondays league opener a chance, but also some youth team players from the Under 19 squad. An entertaining match, with plenty of goal-mouth action in front of a crowd of almost 2,000 ended in a narrow 3-2 victory for the Italians.
Federico Chiesa put AC Fiorentina into a comfortable lead with goals in the tenth and twelfth minutes. With just under a half-hour on the clock, the Blau-Gelben pulled a goal back, when Onel Hernandez took advantage of a good through ball from Eros Dacaj (26‘). In the second-half, Hernandez was on target again to intermittently make it 2-2 (67‘), latching on to an incomplete clearance and slotting past the advancing keeper. Unfortunately the Italians had a fitting answer and took the lead again in the 76th minute, with Nikola Milenkovic heading home from a corner to make the final score 2-3.
It was a test friendly at a very high level against a strong opponent and six players from our U19s got the opportunity to gain some experience. Above all else, it is important to gather as much match practice as possible and operate in different systems.
We had been looking forward to the game. There was a draw in it for us. We had heavy legs following the tough game in Dusseldorf on Monday night, but it was an opportunity for us to recommend ourselves to the coach. In the bus we sang him a song for his birthday.
We presented ourselves positively in today’s test against Fiorentina and we are now looking forward to our first home game, which will undoubtedly be tough going. Our complete concentration is now set on Heidenheim.
